Ideas for someone with hearing needs

Hey everyone,

I hope you all made it home safely after the Leadership Symposium. I am reaching out to see if anyone has suggestions for an individual with hearing needs who is working at an ambulance internship (please see below for additional details.) Due to his hearing it is sometime difficult for his coworkers to get his attention, does anyone have any suggestions for some simple solutions that may work for him? I have a few ideas, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experience in this area.

"For the ambulance internship (and also for after because I really like it here and want to stay on as a volunteer), I need some extra help. There are safety concerns because it's kind of harder to get my attention than it is to get a regular crew member's attention during calls. There's just stuff going on and I'm not always looking at the specific person who happens to be addressing me, whether to grab something off the rig or to watch out for some danger. Is there anything that can be done, maybe some sort of button that a medic could press to alert me to danger rather than trying to get my attention verbally? Because when they have to work harder to look out for me, they put themselves at more risk than they already are because they're busy trying to talk to me instead of protecting themselves."

Thank you!!

Could you use one of those care giver haptic buzzers but in reverse of usual use- he would wear the receiver in his pocket or maybe in an armband like joggers use for phones. His co workers would push the "panic button" to alert him. Might even be some nurse calling station versions that have multiple panic buttons for multiple co workers.

Hey Melinda, great seeing you in NM. I have a staff member with a particular interest in all things hearing / audio and I'll see if he has ideas. Will keep you posted.

It was great seeing you too Phillip! If your staff has any ideas that'd be awesome, one day soon I will make the trip east to visit!

Happy to chat about some ideas.... since I always have a few more questions before sharing some ideas.
