resources to share from director's symposium
I had a running list of resources to share/post but not sure who needed them, so here it is all at once:
MDM:
Several people asked about our mobile device management (MDM) for iPads. We use JAMF (bc UT said we had to) paired with the JAMF self serv app on our iPads so people can download any app we own. They can login to their own apple account if they want (we wipe every device when it comes back). We also have Apple School Manager for app purchases (there is a business version for non education entities) but there are some options to not use this- not sure what they are (Apple Configurator maybe?). It works most of the time :). I would prefer Hexnode bc it can do multiple platforms. Meraki also offers multiple platforms and we used it several generations back so I am sure it is even better now. As with any MDM, every time there is a device system software update- everything crashes and doesn't work for a bit- rather frustrating.
Computer reuse:
Most Goodwills have at least one computer/tech recycling place per state- Tx has 3 I think. They often have brick and mortar stores as well as online- here are some examples in Houston, Waco. At the Austin/Central Texas Goodwill, if you take one of the tech training courses, you can get discounted gadgets. Also, Dell Reconnect takes donations, fixes them up and then makes them available at most of these Goodwill upcycles places.
Community 1st:
Program that supports housing the unhoused in Austin (My DME sub contractor is opening a warehouse there and training the residents to do the upcycling): Community First- super cool story- started as food truck to feed homeless and has grown into this. I think there are 2 villages in Austin now and a third being build. Their goal is to house all 3k of the chronically homeless in Austin and i think they might just do it. The villages are tiny homes, 3d printed homes, and mobile homes. The mean age is 67 and they always have other medical issues so the need for DME was great- introduced Project Mend (my sub) to them and the rest happened organically.

I remembered one more thing I was going to send someone in respect to AI/isolation/computer screen time (this might have been over an adult beverage:))- a weird rather prophetic sci fi story from 1909 (YES 1909!) The Machine Stops by E. M. Foster. Free version (it is out of copyright) download.
