Looking for Thermostat option for Blind/VI users
Hello everyone. We are looking for options from Demo/Loan centers to control Thermostats for folks with a visual disability. Recently have had requests for manual adjusted rather than operation by phone or tablet. We are looking for any options and feedback for either manual or electronic management. Hi John!
Two options worth considering. The Round Easy-To-See Thermostat from MaxiAids (https://www.maxiaids.com/product/the-round-easy-to-see-thermostat) looks great — large 4" dial, raised bold numbers every 10 degrees, tactile lines at every even degree between 42–88°F, and audible clicks every 2 degrees. Haven't personally used it but it seems to have great tactile features.
My usual go-to is the standard Honeywell Round at Big Box Stores (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Honeywell-The-Round-Mechanical-24-Volt-Non-Programmable-Thermostat/5004044255) and then I add tactile marks. It is simple and reliable, but requires that extra step.
The key before recommending either is confirming compatibility — system type (gas, oil, electric, heat pump), whether it's single or two-stage, and heating only vs. heat/cool combined. The MaxiAids version covers a broad range including forced warm air, hot water, steam and gravity systems, while the Lowe's model is a 24-volt single-stage unit. Hope that helps!
