Across the country, many older adults are embracing this call to action by using assistive technology to lead more active, connected, and independent lives — showing that aging is not about slowing down, but about lighting up new possibilities. Assistive technology is making it easier than ever for older adults to stay safe in their homes, participate fully in their communities, and maintain vital social connections. From voice-activated home systems to accessible kitchen tools to prepare and eat a meal, to devices for accessible transportation, these tools are changing lives every day. Assistive technology can include any device or tool that can help someone with a functional challenge keep or improve their independence.
One important resource helping to lead this movement is the network of Assistive Technology (AT) Act Programs available in every U.S. state and territory. These programs provide free services such as device demonstrations, short-term loans, equipment reuse programs and guidance on finding and funding the right tools. Whether someone needs a simple device to make daily tasks easier or a high-tech solution for mobility or communication, AT Act Programs offer hands-on support to help older adults find what works best for them. Assistive Technology Programs focus on increasing awareness, access, and utilization of assistive technology devices and services.
You can find out more about assistive technology at at3center.net. You can also find out more about the program in your state or territory in the directory of state and territory assistive technology programs.
This Older Americans Month, let’s celebrate the way older adults are flipping the script on aging — using technology to stay active, independent, and connected. With the right tools and support, the future for older Americans is not just bright — it’s brilliant.
