July 9, 2025 - Grants and Funding Strategies for ReUse Programs

I wanted to share some fantastic insights from Lori, Director of Maryland's AT Act Program, who presented during our ReUse Community of Practice on July 9th, 2025.

Foundation Funding Resource for Government Programs

Lori shared a valuable document titled "MDTAP Foundation Fact Sheet.pdf" created by their grant writer and attached here in this discussion. This resource explains how foundations can legally fund government agencies like AT Act Programs when the work aligns with charitable purposes. The fact sheet addresses common misconceptions, provides IRS guidance, and includes talking points for seeking foundation support.

If you're interested in this resource for your state program, Lori notes that you should customize the section about how your organization meets the IRS "Charitable Purpose" standard before implementation.

Emergency Shelter AT Kits

Lori also highlighted Maryland's innovative Emergency Shelter Assistive Technology kits that are deployed throughout the state during emergencies. These kits have proven invaluable during flooding, hurricanes, and at mass vaccination and testing sites.

What's included in each AT Emergency Kit:

  • Ubi-duo (real-time interactive communication device for deaf or hard of hearing)
  • Pocketalker assisted listening device and loop
  • Noise cancelling headphones (children and adult sizes)
  • Handheld video magnifier with 5" display
  • Handheld lighted magnifier (3x, 4.5x and 25X magnification)
  • Chattervox portable speech amplifier
  • Dry erase board with markers
  • Word Power Communication Board
  • Batteries
  • 2 Power strips (8 outlets and 2 USB per device)
  • Extension cord
  • Disposable headphone covers
  • Bluetooth headset with microphone (for tablet connection to VRI Service)
  • Pelican case with combination lock

Please see attached document "AT Emergency Shelter kits" for more information.

If you'd like more information about either of these resources, please contact Lori directly.
